The third annual event will celebrate Juneteenth, which is known to some in the United States as Freedom Day. Officially observed each year on June 19, the holiday marks the day that all were made aware of the end of slavery and the Civil War. In 2021, the same year Juneteenth became a federal holiday, District 300 hosted its first Juneteenth celebration at Dundee-Crown High School. It started as a small event led by Tola Makinde – who is now a Board of Education member and still serves as the event’s primary organizer – with the support of District 300 staff.
The event has steadily grown in size and the number of community members who attend.
District 300 anticipates this year will be the biggest Juneteenth event it has hosted and wants community members to be a part of it.
