Day 1: National Agricultural Week

Quail Eggs in the Suburbs of Carpentersville

By Rebecca Orlovich March 21, 2023

Happy National Agriculture Week! This week focuses on the education of what the term agriculture means, where it’s around us, and why it’s important. Please see  https://carpentersville.macaronikid.com/articles/63e9155fa6651d0925d9f496/national-agriculture-week for a definition of agriculture and why it is important.

Today’s focus is on finding agriculture around us. We are going to imaginary travel to the outskirts of Carpentersville and visit Ant, a local who raises quails.

When asked about why he raises quails and why it’s important Ant replied , “I strive to include a bit of the countryside within the suburbs of Carpentersville, I mainly started raising quail and wanting to share them with others because of how important I feel it is to know where your food comes from, and how suburban friendly quail really are. I took a great interest after seeing how much of a sustainable option quail would be, and I feel like it would be wonderful to share that with others so they could connect with their food and their environment as well.” Ant is involved with agriculture because he is raising live animals (quails) that provide the product of eggs to eat. Also egg shells help with fertilization of soil!

Ant sells the quail eggs at $4 a dozen. Haven’t tried quail eggs? Either have I. Tomorrow I will be buying three eggs for a dollar from Ant to try. Whether you are looking for a new experience or want to buy local and fresh join me by buying a dollar of quail eggs (or more). You can reach Ant at 773-407-0302. If you buy from him you will be placed in a raffle for a prize! Just send in a picture of you and your quail eggs to mackidcarpentersville@macaronikid.com. This ends March 31. Want your photo to be featured in a future article too? Just say so in email.

In honor of Ant, quail eggs, and Easter we are having an egg decorating contest. Find a coloring page (or start from scratch and draw) with a egg on it and decorate it how ever you would like (paint, crayons, ripped paper, Pom poms, ribbon, all the above, none of the above, etc.) and take a picture of it and send it into mackidcarpentersville@macaronikid.com with your age and first name. (If you do not want their first name and or age to be posted please just include it in the email). By sending it in I have your permission to post it on the Facebook page and the eggs will be voted upon for best design. If we get enough submissions I will post the eggs by age group and have more than one prize (one per age group.) Submissions are due April 1st and will be voted upon until Easter.

Be on the look out for opportunities this week on winning prizes and activities. And make sure to pay Ant a visit!
